Language goal

Students practice daily routines, sports routines, healthy habits, adverbs of frequency, and time expressions in American English.

Interaction goal

Students do not only read sentences. They ask questions to test if a sentence is true or false, then explain their guess.

How to Play

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Write three sentencesEach student writes three sentences about their real routine. Two sentences must be true. One sentence must be a lie.
  2. Use Unit 4 grammarEach sentence should include a routine verb, a frequency word or phrase, and a time expression when possible.
  3. Read the three sentencesThe speaker reads the sentences in a neutral voice. Do not laugh, explain, or reveal the lie.
  4. Ask follow-up questionsClassmates ask questions to find details. The speaker must answer naturally, but should try to protect the lie.
  5. Guess the lieClassmates choose one sentence and explain why they think it is false.
  6. Reveal and correctThe speaker reveals the lie and says the true version of the sentence.

How to ask about truth and lies

Use these questions to investigate. Start with do/does for yes/no questions, and use what, when, what time, where, why, how often for details.

Do you really wake up at that time? How often do you do that? What time do you usually do it? When do you do that activity? Where do you usually do it? Why do you do that? Does your family know about this routine? Can you give us one more detail? Which sentence is false? Is sentence number two the lie? I think sentence number ___ is true.
