The Stereotype Guessing Game

In this classroom activity, students prepare clues about a hidden identity. Their classmates listen, analyze the descriptions, and guess the character.

The goal is to practice personality adjectives, manner adverbs, behavior descriptions, and respectful discussion about stereotypes.

Students playing a stereotype guessing game in class

Activity goal

Students will describe a hidden character using clues. They must use descriptive adjectives and manner adverbs to help their classmates guess the stereotype, profession, or personality type.

Grammar focus

Use adjectives to describe personality and manner adverbs to describe behavior.

Speaking focus

Present clues clearly and use body language to support your description.

Critical thinking

Discuss stereotypes respectfully and explain why a clue matches a character.

How to play

Follow these steps to prepare and present your hidden identity to the class.

1

Research and choose

Choose a common stereotype, role, or personality type. For example: the artist, the chef, the scientist, the gamer, the athlete, the bookworm, or the influencer.

Think about how this person usually acts, speaks, dresses, studies, works, or interacts with others.

2

Prepare your clues

Write three clear clues to describe your hidden character. Do not write the name of the character in your clues.

  • Use at least two descriptive adjectives.
  • Use at least two manner adverbs.
  • Describe actions, habits, personality, or behavior.
3

Present to the class

Go to the front of the class and read your clues clearly. Do not say the name of the character. Let your classmates guess.

After they guess, explain which words helped them identify the hidden character.

4

Discuss respectfully

Talk about whether the stereotype is fair or unfair. Remember: the goal is to practice language, not to judge people.
